Week 1: Loops , Sampling & The Roots of Hip Hop

• The birth of sampling and it's use in Hip Hop
• Sampling law. Essential theory on sampling
• Practical sampling with Logic's EXS24 sampler
• Editing, processing and layering loops
• "MPC Style" beat programming in Logic
• How to use Logic 9's Flextime function

Week 2: Beatmaking Techniques

• Finding sample sources. Building custom kits in Logic
• Layering samples and building your own drum banks
• How to use groove - pushing & pulling beats
• Creating Groove Quantize templates in Logic
• Programming beats and drum fills

Week 3: The Melodic Elements

• Creating Basslines - classic bass sounds
• How to program basslines
• Programming melodic parts (piano, strings etc.)
• Creating and using synthesized sounds
• How to create your own sampled loops
• Degrading the sound to add authentic vintage flavour

Week 4: Vocals, Arrangement & Mixing Technique

• Arranging your backing track
• Recording vocals. Working with MC's
• Editing and overdubbing vocals
• Compression & EQ techniques
• Mixing the track down to play in the club
